WINTER VINEYARD UPDATE from Brian Gregory: "If you’ve been around a few seasons, you’ve probably heard me say, for those of us who work in the vineyard, we consider February, in many ways, to be the peak of our season.
It’s the time dormant pruning of the vines begins in earnest, after we’ve had a chance to measure the growth of the previous season, and assess the amount of fruit our vines can yield in the coming season.
Our ever varied Ohio winters also require that we spend considerable time assessing the effects of winter on our vines, which we have to determine before pruning can begin.
Today’s vineyard blog talks a little about the work of the “peak” season: http://gervasigrapes.blogspot.com/2016/02/peak.html
In the coming weeks, you will see ever growing mounds of prunings in our vineyards. We frequently get requests from guests about whether we have vines available for crafts, etc: the answer is YES, especially at this time of year. Please feel free to continue to send such requests to me, although at this time of year any piles of prunings are available to anyone who wants to haul some away.
Finally, it’s not toil and drudgery. Mid-February is often a beautiful, a slightly magical time amongst the vines. Here’s a post from a few Valentine’s Days ago, about this season when the birds begin to woo their mates: http://gervasigrapes.blogspot.com/2014/02/romance.html"
